Week 9: SCORE 80 to WIN!

SCORE 80 TO WIN!!!

"Managing your Team" is a current strategic theme at my organization. Score 80 to Win was implemented to drive new representative additions beginning on October 15th and ends on November 17th. The strategy was developed to strengthen the team environment consisting of District Sales Managers and Leadership Representatives, while increasing district staff (representatives). New representatives to a district's staff count equate to opening new Avon stores. Additions (new representatives) are a key performance indicator, which is measured every two weeks. Without new representatives, the district cannot meet other key performance indicators like sales, orders, activity, and number of new customers. Score 80 to Win will support the key performance indicators and the team members trying to meet these goals. The concept of this strategy is to support the District Managers through team efforts to drive additions growth. This is a subtle way to pull people together without demanding that the representatives work as a team to turn the district around (Hill, 1994). Without the support of the Leadership representatives, the District Manager will not meet the district goals. Teamwork is essential to achieve these goals.

How are the teams developed? The responsibility of team building falls first to Avon as an organization, and second to the District Managers (Hill, 1994). Furthermore, the team building activity enhances the representatives' personal businesses by furthering their individual development leading to increased earnings. In order to make this experience successful, the District Managers must ensure a positive team experience and hand out support materials to the representatives, which will promote future team involvement. The details of the Score 80 to Win incentive is below.

  1. Hi Andrea!
This looks like a great example of how to incentivize a team - something I'm sure Avon is excellent doing! I'm curious, I'm guessing that representatives are not all in the same office, correct? How much contact do reps have with one another and do you find that there are ever conflicts between them?

    1. Hi Ashley!

You are correct, the representatives work out of their homes as independent contractors. They see each other at monthly sales meetings or bi-weekly leadership meetings. Additionally, I try to arrange for them to work together on different recruiting events such as job fairs. The more they work together, the easier my job is! There are occassions when I have to be careful who I pair up because some of them are very competitive and conflicts do arise. Moreover, I have to filter what I hear because some of them will try to get on "my good side" by telling me things the others have said about me. Is is challenging at times, but without their help I cannot achieve my district's goals. Great questions! Thank you for asking!

  2. Jacqueline, I really like the way you incorporated the incentives at your company with the reading for this week. That was a really good fit. I could really relate to the key performance indicators which are measured every two weeks. We have a similar system in my company and usually if we miss the indicators we miss the goal for the month, and similarly, if we are ahead on the indicators, we make the goal. The additional incentives like the iPads and the iPods make meeting monthly goals more fun. Great blog post this week. Thank you.

  3. Hi Andrea!

I find my district's goals hard to achieve without the effort of the entire team. In fact, my company has been struggling across the country with sales plans and other indicators having been set too high. The incentives are the best way to push the representatives to get out and work especially because we are trying to manage independent contracators. Moreover, there are always incentives for the district sales managers and the leadership representatives. This year I earned the IPad (with WiFI!) for increasing my sales base by so much over my set plan. It really motivated me to work hard! Does your organization use incentives to motivate their employees?

    Thank you!
    Jac
